My iPod has served me well these past 12 months
The BestMuse - Black Holes and Revelations
I dug listening to Muse's first album, Showbiz, towards the end of last year so I began 2007 by listening to their newer material. Absolution was decent, but Black Holes and Revelations blew my mind. Muse has fully developed their own style - no longer can they be called a Radiohead clone - perfectly mixing classical chord progressions, hard rock sensibilities, and lightly sprinkled with the latest in music program effects.
Runner UpAimee Mann - Whatever
I've always been a fan of Mann's work on Bachelor No. 2 and the soundtrack to the "Magnolia," so I delved into her older music. What I discovered was a rare gem - Mann's songwriting isn't quite as haunting and sharp as her later material, but the energy of youth breeds out equally interesting results.
The WorstPink Floyd - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
During the summer of 2002, I worked nights at a computer company with a coworker who was obsessed with Pink Floyd. I can't remember if he forced me to listen to this album then or not, but I decided to give it a thourough review this year. What rubbish. Hailed as "one of the most influential albums of all time," all I hear on The Piper at the Gates of Dawn is a full album of the worst of Sgt. Pepper's-era Lennon and Harrison.
Runner UpCheap Trick - All Shook Up
I loved going through Cheap Trick's first four albums again. My tastes have matured and I can finally appreciate their quirky, power pop (especially Heaven Tonight and Dream Police). So, I was pumped to hear All Shook Up for the first time. What a let down! The band is just going through the motions and only one track was worth keeping.
