2008 Purchases
Eh, this actually is a weak category. My original idea was to keep a list of large pruchases that I would make throughout the year but I obviously lost focus quickly. I know there are some things that didn't get tracked on here, and some of these other items are less than $30 - hardly worth recording. But, for better or worse, here are a bunch of random items I purchased this year and my comments on them.
I purchased 9 ... items or something this year. Last year I bought 17 of whatever these are.
BEST: New Computer - 2/6/2008My laptop never cut it as a music recording station. The main problem was an uninterrupted hollow effect on anything recorded on the computer. I bought a piece of hardware that fixed this strange effect, but using it would produce a session-killing lag. The whole process was a nightmare. So I tried going back to my previous desktop to use just for recording but it was so old and tired, it crapped out about a month or so after I set it up. Finally, I bit the bullet and purchased an absolute beast of a new desktop. This thing has everything I need - most notably a perfect recording environemnt - and has really solidified the idea that I am a desktop man for life.
RUNNER-UP: 1995 Fender Stratocaster - 5/12/2008My very first guitar was a Stratocaster-wannabe made from some company called Charvel. It was black and white and a piece of crap but it survived years of abuse from two fledgling guitar players. Hell, it's still alive and kicking after 13 years of beatings! When it came time to get a new guitar - my procrastination technique in lieu of repairing my 30-year old Gibson Les Paul - I decided to go for nostalgia and get a real Fender Stratocaster from 1995; the year I began to play. And, even though I've considered Les Pauls as my favorite guitar for over a decade now, I found myself playing the Strat over and over. I love it's crunchy sound and playing it gives me a lot of inspiration as it is half as light as the Les Paul. It brings back a lot of the feelings I had when I first played guitar - an innocent love of music. Damn good guitar. Oh ... and I still haven't fixed the Les Paul!
WORST: USB/SATA Cable - 5/23/2008I bought this device in an attempt to save data from old, crashed hard drives. The only other alternative was to ship them off to a lab who would professionally retreive as much data as they could in an brutally expensive process. Well, I gave it the old college try with this cable. In fact, it worked just as well as the lab did. I got a few old files, but the hard drives were so old and corrupted I didn't get as much as I wanted. So, I shipped one off to a lab to see what they could find. Turns out they sent me exactly what I was able to get. And charged me a shitload. Assholes!
RUNNER-UP: NBA League Pass - 10/27/2008I'm sorry, but finally being able to watch every Mavericks game is just so shitty. Oh, who am I kidding? I love the league pass. There was nothing left on the list I compiled that I could consider a "bad" decision. So I just wanted to shout out about League Pass since it just barely lost to the Stratocaster. The actual second-worst purchases I made were all the cables and converters I bought to try and get my PS3 "ultimate experience" set up - so it could go to my computer monitor and TV. I have a history of buying a bunch of shit in an attempt to solve problems before taking time to really investigate the situation. But since those weren't listed, I'll move on ...
